The Obama victory should just be seen as a changing of the guard at the White House. It is no magic formula to reverse the present American reversal of fortune, and how the world views the US now more than ever. Obama’s campaign slogan of ‘Change’ is no fairy dust. This is a mighty scary time for Obama. He has just entered a very tough and tight situation. If he thinks that his victory is a tremendous stroke of luck, he should wake up from all the sweet dreaming and come to grips with how the US is actually regarded by the rest of the world right now. The first African-American president of the United States is about to head the biggest failing nation on the map of the earth these days. Fairy dust vanishes in a flash.
Obama said he wants to restore US superiority in the world. The mystique of the ‘first black US president’ will make hero-seekers in society to believe that. He said he will install ‘change.’ A society that is in dire need of a savior will relish that grandstanding epithet. There is a huge possibility that this same society will sing a different tune in so short a time. Such is the fate of politicians and the people who believe them. Everything centers on the promise that is promoted during an election campaign. In moments of inspiration, of both politician and audience, the campaign slogan is a rallying cry.
Nothing much will ‘change’ with the American situation. American corporate greed has run the country into the ground. No amount of political influence can undo the shattering of an entire economy. No amount of fervent, even feverish, emotional political climate can reverse the devastation wreaked by financial institutions. Only the people themselves, the American taxpayers themselves, can salvage the tattered US economy. The American people should realize that they should have been hailing themselves instead of a singular political figure. Politics ruin the true essence of democracy.
