Sometimes most subtle and beautiful truths are lost in a full length feature film. Sometimes they are narrated in a span of about 12 minutes. That’s the magic of a surreal theme, and poetic but dramatic short film, ‘We have decided not to die’ by Daniel Askill. Short films can be a very powerful medium of self expression in modern world.
Daniel Askill’s experimental film is about three separate characters going through pangs of survival, near death and breaking free to float again. Through three tales (which he call rituals): Birth, Between and Rebirth, Daniel Askill has created an excellent surrealistic spiritual film in modern busy city life. This is something very symbolic too. All thinking souls go through such catharsis at some point in life. It’s the never die spirit which helps true survivors to transcend beyond pains of survival and fears of life and death.
If you have a penchant for non-linear surreal narrative styles do set aside 11 mins 50 secs and go to any of the links below to watch emotional journey of three people facing different elements who learn to float, jump and break free and thus go beyond death. Death can be a good beginning point of a different life. This is pure visual poetry with excellent music.
