Perhaps, one the most famous branches of the Massachsetts Instiute of Technology (MIT), the Media Lab has been given an all new domain that was unveiled on Friday, thus laying new grounds for the more cutting edge innovations and state of the art technological breakthroughs. The Media Lab Complex has been designed by the famed Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki and Associates, in collaboration with Leers Weinzapfel Associates.

The MIT Media Lab has is widely known for its scientific breakthroughs and laying the seeds for some of the hottest technologies currently available, such as the incredibly popular gaming title, Guitar Hero and the display screen technology used in the likes of Amazon Kindle e-reader. One of the most intriguing aspects of the media lab is the private funding that, spans across 60 major international corporate entities. These companies have been known to fund the experiments provide the students of the famous institution all the freedom they require for the creativity and innovation. In exchange the companies have the legal rights to use the innovations generated at the venue, with out having to pay any royalty fee.

The all new sprawling MIT Media Lab Complex is six stories tall and covers around 163,000-square-foot of land mass. The labs and the the work spaces in the new building overlook the Charles River and gives a panoramic view of the Boston skyline. The upper floors of the building have been reserved for lecture halls and public gatherings and the laboratories are designed to be closely knit together, to facilitate, generation of new ideas and innovations.

According to Frank Moss (Director, Media Labs),

“The magic of the Media Lab is its ability to bring together researchers from an eclectic range of disciplines — engineers, computer scientists, artists, musicians, and others — who work together collaboratively to invent technologies that improve people’s lives and transform society. The openness and transparency of this incredible new building will support the Lab’s unique style of research and allow us to take on the major challenges that confront the world in the 21st century, such as human health, education and sustainable cities.”
