International press has requested the United Nations Human Rights Council to endorse the establishment of ‘media corridors’ in Gaza where “hostilities shall be suspended during an agreed period of time to allow all media professionals to do freely their job.” The Geneva-based international press organizations Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) and the International Covenant for the Protection of Journalists (ICPJ) have called on the UN to bring their request to the discussion table.
From a statement issued in Geneva, these media groups also called on the warring factions to end the conflict and halt all military operations. Along with the message is a reiteration of their previous draft convention addressing the need for the facilitation of media operations in conflict zones. The most important aspect of their call to the UN is for the protection of journalists in war zones. They propose that “during a military conflict, and in case of a military attack, a specific warning shall be given through “efficient means” to media without exception.” Media installations in Gaza have been under attacks, as well.
Media should know, first and foremost, that coverage of conflict areas is life-threatening in itself. Just like soldiers, they will find themselves in the middle of the crossfire. The very nature of their job is dangerous. In a time of war and military operations, no amount of safety precaution can be possibly given to media. Their task is of the highest risk. They know that. And any attempt to be in the middle of a conflict zone is a decision they have to take and be ready for.
