Mitch Altman has developed a DIY Brain Machine. The machine is meant to take you through a trance like journey, which is induced after repeated flashes of light, alter your state of mind. Though the title is a little misleading, the Brain Machine is in a way a simple device that seeks to explain the way our brain functions and how we could possibly enjoy the states of relaxation.

All that Mitch Altman uses is Limor Fried’s MiniPOV kit, and converts it into an SLM. For the uninitiated, SLM refers to the Sound and Light Machine, which can mimic the brain waves in certain ways and allow the user to take a ‘trip’. Now I really don’t know if such ‘trips’ are legal but he even claims to ‘enjoy’ hallucinations with the help of this machine he has built. You would start off with high beta, which would be the conscious level. Later, you would slip to alpha, theta and finally delta, which is the deepest and most mysterious level of unconsciousness. Apparently, it is in this state of mind that you would feel intuitions and insights.
