A group of British scientists have devised a virtual cocoon capable of recreating sights, smells, sounds and tastes of far flung destinations like Kenya’s Masai Mara or an Alpine meadow. The developers of this virtual reality helmet hope that it will help users to greet friends and family in another part of the world as though they were in the same room.
Not only that, the user will also get a chance to find out how people lived in the past. You can explore ancient Egypt, Rome or Greece. Still in the developmental phase, a group of academics in the US are taking this virtual cocoon further. This prototype helmet can be connected to your PC. Featuring a high-definition dynamic screen, this one will create pictures ten times darker or 30 times brighter than regular TV sets.
Then there is the tube connected to box of chemicals ready to release all kinds of smells under your nose. There is a similar device to spray flavors in your mouth. As bizarre as it may sound, but the helmet also has facility to change heat and humidity. We hear that it will take five more years for the headset to be used by public.
