In a study conducted by the University of Washington, it was revealed that girls who suffer from ADHD in their childhood, or what can be expanded as the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome, are more susceptible to adolescent depression.
It was found that girls turn their anxieties and other such problems inwards and thus become depressed, suicidal and develop eating disorders. However, boys tend to become more violent during their adolescence. If your child shows signs of attention related problems, a prompt visit to a clinical psychologist may thwart future depressive syndromes.
In fact, ADHD is often ignored amongst girls and is treated among bys, probably because the prevalence of ADHD among girls are not something that parents worry about. The study however was conducted mostly on whites which means the samples would not represent a large group of population. They used about 800 children for the study and it received wide attention from the media and the public.
