The gourmet and gourmand alike know and love Jamie Oliver, Britain’s finest chef. Often called the Naked Chef since that had been the title of his first cookery show on television, Jamie has not yet had to resort to nudity to get people interested in cooking. His amiable commentary while cooking, bright blue eyes and even the childish lisp add to the glamour that is Jamie Oliver. Is it any wonder then that Jamie is the winner of the TED Prize this year?

The TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Prize is a cash prize that is awarded to individuals from different fields as a means for them to change the world with a chosen ‘wish’. For the past five years, the TED Prize was awarded to 3 individuals each year but Jamie became so very lucky this year in becoming the first sole receiver of the $100,000 cash prize. Jamie will present his wish to all TEDsters and the rest of the world in February at TED2010.

With the list of past winners of the TED Prize including big names like Bono and Bill clinton, there is some criticism about Jamie becomign Mr. TED2010. In case you doubt Jamie’s ability to change a world then just a look at his cooking style. Jamie’s shows (Oliver’s Twist, Jamie at Home, etc) don’t just make cooking look easy, he also inspires people to try healthy cooking; the shows have even led to a change in school cafeteria food in the UK. On a more personal level, Jamie’s fight with obesity amongst youngsters is refreshing and his Fifteen Foundation helps youngsters from unprivileged backgrounds start a career as chefs.
