Diseases usually have unpronounceable scary scientific names, sometimes even humorous un-sexy names, and bring to mind pictures of strange bacteria that we faintly remember having studied in a long ago biology class. Not often though would the mention of a disease bring to mind the image of a well-known person.
Dirk Silz, creative director at Das Committee advertising agency, was faced with the challenge to create an image for the deadly killer AIDS and all his team could think was that AIDS could not have a pretty face. So, they came up with the un-prettiest face to represent AIDS: Hitler! The advertisement for the AIDS is a mass murderer campaign is directed at the trend of having unprotected sex and hopes to awaken people to the dangers involved. The ad is a succession of blurred steamy images of a couple having sex, at the end of which we see the leering image of the Hitler look-alike (and, yes, you want to scream aloud at this point!) along with a tag of the campaign title.
Other individuals being portrayed as AIDS are Saddam Hussein and Joseph Stalin (perhaps they can add Bush to the list). The ad which will be screened on German television and cinemas has already gained controversy for depicting HIV infected individuals in such a vile manner. However, it isn’t HIV infected individuals but the earlier faceless virus itself that has been given the feared face of Hitler. Check out the ad which was made by Das Committe in collaboration with AIDS awareness group Regenbogen e.V. for World AIDS Day 1st December ’09.
