Al Gore speaks passionately of the triple crises of climate change, economic security, and national security and says that “it is increasingly clear that the link that unites them is our dangerous dependence on fossil fuels.” His prescription for solution: “Reload the U.S. economy, restore our leadership in the world, and retake control of our destiny.” In the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate, Al Gore laid out a prediction that the United States will regain its credibility and renew its authority to lead the world in what is fair and effective. To this, he clearly states that America will launch the “global architecture to solve the climate crisis and secure the future of human civilization.”
He gave a bombastic analysis when he said that the US uses its money to buy oil from the Middle East only to burn it and destroy the planet. For him, the economy of fossil fuels has become a roller coaster ride that is going to end up crashing, and that America is sitting in the front row. He has pictures to illustrate his point regarding the need for urgent action.
Al Gore is adamant with what he thinks: industrialized countries should set tough targets and timetables, and help developing countries mitigate their impact. The problems of deforestation and carbon emissions should be faced squarely right away. “We must be ready for accelerated action this year,” said Gore who urged colleagues to support the economic stimulus plan by the Obama administration. Concretely the actions would be to double production in three years of renewable energies, build new networks of transmission, enhance energy efficiency, and impose new emission limits for cars.
Of course, Al Gore is grandstanding. Behind all the bombast of talk on the potential of doom for this planet because of man’s overusage of the wrong power and energy lurks the dirty secret that his mansion consumes more electricity in a month than the entire town where the mansion is located.
The Big Brother mentality is so hard to shake off.
