On June 22, Nicolas Sarkozy declared the burqa as not welcome in France. The French president regards the Muslim dress not as a religious symbol but a sign of subservience and degradation of women.
The al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has threatened to take revenge against France after Sarkozy banned the wearing of the burqa in the country. These threats were signified by jihadist forums on the Internet.
The AQIM was previously known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, an Islamist militia which aims to overthrow the Algerian government and create an Islamic State. It is an insurgency group that has been classified by the United States and the European Union as a terrorist organization.
“We, the Mujahidin will not be silent in the face of such provocation and injustice. We call on all Muslims to face this hostility by greater hostility and fight against attempts by France to distract the faithful men and women… their faith by adhering to the teachings of Islamic Sharia,” says Abu Musab Abdul Wadouda, head of the AQIM.
France vows not to be intimidated, on the other hand. The country stresses that one of its high values is the recognition of the freedom of others and the freedom of women.
