Recently, Amazon, one of the biggest online retail chains, applied some changes to their Product Advertising API, that is supposedly wreaking havoc one of the most revered Apple iPhone developers, Wil Shipley.
Shipley came into the spotlight after his mind blowing application for the iPhone, called Delicious Library. But now, with the changed guidelines of Amazon stating that,
“You will not, without our express prior written approval requested via this link , use any Product Advertising Content on or in connection with any site or application designed or intended for use with a mobile phone or other handheld device,”
have put a sudden stop to Shipley’s eight months of research and development efforts.
Inspite of asking permission from Amazon to run his application, he was denied the request given the explanation that, no exceptions could be made. According to Will Shipley,
“They (Amazon) told me to remove it today, or they’d shut me down.”
This is not first instance that, Amazon has barred application developers from taking benefit of its data. Amazon has been in the process of banning all such developers for the past two years, citing reasons that, it wished to better serve the consumers, who used Amazon.com services via their mobile devices. The hypothesis being that, Amazon wants to reserve all the rights to the applications that might be developed using its data. Therefore, it has made impossible for developers to use its database, as Amazon might want to create a similar application one day and add more revenue to its earnings.
