With the Delhi High Court’s decision to legalise homosexuality, it has become hard for anyone to differentiate between those who truly believe in the cause and the fakers who are jumping into the bandwagon for their 15 minutes of fame. Perhaps, the fear is mere paranoia and well-wishers of the LGBT community are now making their voices heard because there is less fear of being humiliated.
For whatever reason, ever since the abhorred law was repealed, it seems the community has been finding friends and supporters in the most unlikely of places. Though people had dared to show support earlier, it had been most subtle and the words ‘gay rights’ were rarely used. Take a popular radio station of Bangalore, for instance, which played songs of gay and gay friendly artists at the time the pride parade was held in the city last month. Famed gay anthem ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor also just happened to be played right at the moment when the parade started.
An advertisement for Amul butter has been put up on their website, showing the Amul mascot offering buttered slices of bread to two girls and a with a caption that clearly shows its support to the recent change in the law. The pink fridge and the trademark rainbow hues with the grinning girls in its midst depict the change that has come by in the typical Indian thinking. Whether it is a publicity stunt or a show of true support, only the company can tell for sure. Hopefully, this would not lead to people boycotting Amul products. After all, this is the taste of India. Incidentally, does anyone have any idea whether Baba Ramdev likes butter?
