The current crisis presents an advantage. It gives us food for thought, introspection, and discussion. There are those who prefer to be detached from the present moment and look further. There are some who believe that this crisis can be a unique opportunity to dismantle the status quo and fight to change the rules of the system.
This crisis has many roots, foremost of which is man’s excessive consumption of manufactured products. Instead of accepting the objective reality that the world’s resources are becoming increasingly limited, and therefore more costly, people continue to be on the suicidal path of ‘business as usual.’
The world, as a whole, should get together. People should be related to one another for purposes of the cause to alter the system. Dialogue between communities acts as a catalyst for peace and understanding. There is an immediate need to think about the purpose and means of survival on the planet. There is an immediate need to realize that welfare and personal happiness are more than the reckless pursuit of profit and possession.
On 28 March, under the leadership of WWF, a billion people in over 80 countries will be brought together and turn off their lights – an expression of their choice for a different world. It is also a gesture to wake up and remind political leaders to face environmental challenges of this century and work posthaste towards a more sustainable and genuine commitment to the environment and society.
