Who would have thought, that one day an inanimate entity such as the Internet would become such an important tool of our lives that, our very existence and the world peace would one day be dependent on the effect of the online world on our lives. Well, no need to put your creative imagination into overdrive, because for the year 2010, the internet has infact been nominated for the coveted Nobel Peach Prize.
To be completely honest, it shouldn’t come as surprise to readers, as the internet have proven on numerous occasion that, it can become a tool for the repressed to their word out and can even be used to start a humanitarian movement or a revolution against an oppressor or to save the environment. The proposal to keep Internet as a noble prize nominee has also been endorsed by 2003 Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi as well as other notable figures.
According to Riccardo Luna (Editor in Chief, Wired Magazine, Italy),
“The internet can be considered the first weapon of mass construction, which we can deploy to destroy hate and conflict and to propagate peace and democracy. What happened in Iran after the latest election, and the role the web played in spreading information that would otherwise have been censored, are only the newest examples of how the internet can become a weapon of global hope.”
