Christmas is celebrated for whole lot of reasons. Here is one more reason to celebrate the day. On this day, some 40 years ago, Apollo 8 crew did a live television broadcast from lunar orbit and world saw first shots of Earthrise as seen from Moon!!

There is another interesting twist in the tale. At the end of the show it seems astronauts made a reading from the book of Genesis. Religion and Science both have same focus, that is, understanding life and beginning of life in Universe. But they have always challenged existence of the other too. Church has had history of challenging and even punishing men of excellence, scientists like Galileo whose scientific theories where in direct conflict with beliefs of religious authorities.

Earthrise shot indeed is a most humbling and magnificent picture in the history of science and human life on earth. These words of astronaut Lovell echoes best sentiments, it seems Lovell said, “The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth.” There is a reason to celebrate life in vast universe in spite of all darkness.
