Another Suicide Attack Devastates Pakistan

In yet another spate of suicide bomb attacks, terrorists yesterday struck outside a bank killing 35 people and injuring scores more. The attack took place in the populated region of Rawalpindi in Pakistan. The attack was carried outside a bank, where eager account holders had lined up to get their salaries. The suicide bomb attack took place in the Cannt area of the city and two women are also known to be in casualties list, with more than 65 people injured.

The second blast took place shortly after the Rawalpindi blast at a police checkpoint and the bombers are believed to have detonated the explosives via an explosive vest. The Babu Sabu checkpoint was crowded at the moment of impact and the explosion left 18 people injured, including 17 policemen. According to the regional rescue services, 3 people are known to be seriously injured.

Yesterday’s terror attacks are a testament to the terrorists’ resolve to destabilize Pakistan and deter the government from continuing its offensive against the Taliban and other militant forces in the South Waziristan region. Since the month of October, there have been relentless suicide bomb attacks and commando style raids conducted by the Pakistan Taliban throughout Pakistan instilling widespread fear and insecurity among its citizens. The ongoing terror campaign has punched a hole in Pakistan’s security apparatus and has frequently targeted the armed forces of Pakistan.

Considering the volatile situation in Pakistan, the United Nations has asked all non-essential UN staff to evacuate the north west regions and those who are stationed in these territories, such as humanitarian aid workers and security officials have asked to exercise extreme caution.
