Ipad Apple and Fujitsu Fighting Out Hard Over an iPad Trademark

If you find the news about wars between celebrities interesting then you will probably find this one too equally interesting. This time around the cat fighters are not two female celebs but two big gadget companies; Apple and Fujitsu. Their fight is over the name ‘iPad‘. The interesting thing about this prestigious name is that it has got a long history about itself. To begin, Fujitsu PR director Masahiro Yamane told the New York Times that Fujitsu has been selling their own iPad since 2002.

The company applied for the iPad trademark in 2003. The Jujitsu iPad is a $2,000 Windows CE point-of-sale device. Unfortunately, the application was nipped in the bud itself as a company called Mag-Tek had already registered IPAD for their line of PIN-entry keypads. Soon after, Jujitsu’s application was branded as “abandoned” in April 2009. Following this incident, Jujitsu pressed the Trademark office to reopen the application, and taking a strong stance arguing Fujitsu iPad application had nothing to do with that of Mag-Tek’s IPAD.

The USPTO agreed and finally re-opened the application and the process continued successful till September 2009. The climax of the story took place when Apple interrupted by voicing out their opinion strongly stating that it wasn’t so happy about things. They filed their own iPad trademark application by using a shell company called “IP Application Development.”

I wonder who is to be blamed here but looks like Apple is trying to pick bones with Fujitsu. I wonder why these hot-shot companies are crying and fighting hard over a name. Come on guys, get creative and come up with other names. There are many. You could try “iPed,” “IPED.” “iPid” or “IPID”. Well, it’s just a suggestion.
