One of the biggest names in the mobile communications industry, Nokia has sued Apple Inc. the manufacturers of world renowned, MacBook, iPhone and iPods over 10 patent infringements that, are related to wireless devices.
Nokia has stated that, Apple has been conducting unethical business practices and has continuously been violating the patents for its line of iPhones, dating back to the year 2007, when the first series of iPhone was launched. The Finnish mobile maker, Nokia, has moved the U.S District Court in Delaware for a stay order on the sales of iPhone and is also reportedly seeking for monetary compensation for the damages.
According to Ilkka Rahnasto (Vice President, legal and intellectual property, Nokia),
“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for. Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree to appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”
The patents in questions are owned by Nokia and the phone manufacturer has already invested more than $60 billion in developing those technologies and on research and developing in the field of wireless communications. The patents are related to the fields of wireless data, speech coding, security, and encryption. According to Nokia, it has already licensed the said technologies to 40 different companies, a majority of them being mobile device makers. However, in case of Apple, the company has repeatedly been asked to get the patents licensed for their use, but Apple has always ignored the statement.
According to Jason Schultz,
“There are companies that are patent trolls, that don’t participate in the creation of technology, or they secretly acquire them. Nokia’s not one of these companies. They’re pretty up front about the patents they own. They’re probably not trying to put Apple out of business…but force Apple to play the same game that every other phone company has to play.”

The damn phone has been out for over 2 years. They are obviously not aggressively enforcing the rights violations they are alleging after so much time. Legally they might be within the time frame, but we all know that companies wait years so that settlements will be higher than ever.
