You are so right in saying Autism isn't an illness or a disease as people usually believe. Autism is a part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder which is a disability, and not a disease as people usually believe. Unfortunately, most people do not distinguish between terms such as 'disease', disorder', or disability. I am a post-graduate student of clinical psychology and in my limited clinical experience I have noticed parents terming autism an illness/disease and taking the wrong path. Such a terminology would lead to unscrupulous professionals who come up with 'medicines' for autism. Autistic children need special education, love, care, vocational training and sometimes therapy. Parents must contact their nearest developmental/clinical psychologist for more information. More information is given here.
