Puerto Rican and Oscar-winning actor-producer Benicio del Toro who plays the guerrilla Ernesto Guevara in the film “Che” recently exchanged views on the film with Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez.

Del Toro, 42, arrived in Venezuela on Monday to present the film “Che” by US director Steven Soderbergh. The film that is 4 hours and 28 minutes long has been divided into two parts: “Che, the Argentine” and “Che, the guerrilla.” The Puerto Rican actor won the prize for best actor at the Cannes Film Festival for his interpretation of the legendary Argentine guerrilla.

The actor said that he is interested in knowing the “Bolivarian Revolution” led by Hugo Chavez.

Besides a fondness for their beret and each having a Facebook account with droves of friends, both Che Guevara and Hugo Chavez have a lot in common. For starters, Chavez sees himself as the reincarnation of Che. Both are proponents of socialism. Both are enemies of US imperialism. And both believe in armed struggle as solution to socio-economic imbalance.

Both Che and Chavez are also huge talkers.

With Benicio del Toro’s immense talent, he can very well stretch to playing the massive Chavez in some future film. Of course, this is only if Chavez becomes as ‘commercially’ big a figure as Che is today.
