The 2nd of July this year became more than just another date for a number of individuals when the Delhi high court read down the feared and highly loathed section 377 of the IPC which penalised homosexuality. Although the details of this commendable act seem hazy still, it has not stopped the LGBT community from celebrating.
It may be strange that a community that had been criminalised for some 150 years and is still hated by a large part of the country is represented by the colours of the rainbow. Even with opposition being spewed from every direction, these tough individuals never let go of an opportunity to prove to the world that they are proud of themselves and won’t back down. The Bombay Homosexuals Athletic Group (BHAG) is holding a celebratory run this Sunday to rejoice the Delhi HC verdict. The BHAG! Gay Rights Celebratory Run will begin at 1830 at Joggers Park, Bandra.
The run is for the community but you don’t have to be a part of it to show your support, and although you can be present at the park just to view the joggers and cheer them on, you don’t have to do that, either. Just saying the words ‘It’s okay to be gay’ and actually meaning it goes a long way.
