Railways, one among the world’s widely used modes of transport contributes quite a bit to the carbon emissions and soil pollution through the smoke it emits and the fuel spills. Authorities of Florida have recently decided to cut down this kind of pollution by switching over to biofuels to run the trains. Under this plan, Tri-Rail System of South Florida will henceforth run 8 out of its 10 trains on biodiesel made out of 99% mixed soya or palm oil.
A source from the Federal Transit Administration on Wednesday informed that they were concentrating on encouraging the use of renewable fuels to run trains and buses in the country. Though the authorities are supportive towards this decision, the temperate climate in South Florida wouldn’t help the trains to use such pure blend of bio-diesel as fuel.
Even though the use of biodiesel is safer, some environmentalists feel that this could have an adverse effect on the biodiversity and food supply of the country. So, if Florida still wants to turn its trains green, it has to look for an alternative source of bio-diesel like algae. This would probably be favored by the country’s climate too.
