Take a moment to check out the pictures and then ask yourself if you had ever thought that something so awesomely cool could ever be made from something as mundane as oil barrels. Shaped like a pointy bullet, this sleek racer which features at the Motorsports Design Challenge is a reminder of how much cooler the Mach V could get with so much lesser.

Brainchild of BMW DesignWorks, this concept vehicle is a hydrogen powered racing car following the concept of reuse rather than recycle. The main bodywork, including the wheel discs, has been constructed from oil barrels and barbecue lids. Use of gel-nylon wheels allow the airless tyres to be re-vulcanised or re-treaded when desired. Designed by Richard Kim, the creation of the Salt Flat Racer appears to be inspired by a quote from writer Paul Richter advocating the creation of extraordinary from the ordinary.

Another extraordinary feature of this racer in keeping with the eco-friendly motto is the use of a canary or goldfish as the co-pilot. Instead of giving driving instructions, the co-pilot would be the deciding factor to assess the purity of the racer’s emissions. Rich emissions can lead to your co-pilot getting sick and his eventual death!
