Botox also helps to relieve symptoms of overactive bladder

Injections of Botox are famous for smoothing out facial lines, but they have been found to also help calm the overactive bladder. A team from the United Kingdom found that among the patients with resistant symptoms of overactive bladder, those treated with Botox achieved symptom relief and improved quality of life of up to six months’ duration. There is evidence that Botox may be helpful for people with overactive bladder symptoms resistant to treatment. These results are published in BJU International.

Botox (botulinum toxin) interferes with nerve signals in the treated muscle. Basically, it paralyzes. Botox should then be able to eliminate the spasms that cause the symptoms of overactive bladder or the urgency of urination.

For the new study, treatment with Botox was administered by a small tube or a thin and flexible cystoscope. Each patient received 20 injections through the wall of the bladder and in different parts of the muscles of the bladder.

Per month, the research team found that patients who received Botox injections reported relief of symptoms, as well as a better quality of life. In general, many of the benefits still existed at 24 weeks after treatment ended.

Besides the reduction of symptoms, said the team, increasing the quality of life is perhaps the most important benefit for people with overactive bladder.
