In the Urology field, recent studies with Botox are reaching good results for the patients’ treatment with prostatic hyperplasia (benign increase of the organ that can cause difficulty to urinate) that don’t answer well to the medication or that present important side effects.
According to José Carlos Truzzi, urologist from Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo), the action of the toxin doesn’t limit, in that case, to the relaxation of the musculature. It also induces the programmed death of the cells of the prostate, what provokes decrease of the volume of the organ.
“The results were very favorable. It can be assumed as clinical practice in the next years for those patients that take medicine and they don’t have good answer or present side effects, a quite frequent situation.”
Still the ideal interval among applications isn’t known, but the urologist believes that is superior to one year due to that double effect.
In early stagees, other researches evaluate the application of the toxin against the interstitial cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder of unknown origin that provokes pain when the organ becomes full.
According to Truzzi, the existent treatments are not effective and the toxin can become an alternative. “For the time being, the studies are incipient and they involve patients’” small groups, he says.
