Prison guards have to encounter a number of threats everyday right from dangerous prisoners to psychotic under trials. Sometimes, these prisoners may lock up others and take some of them hostage or threaten to blow up the building! In such a case, robots would come to rescue, as California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation found out. The organization signed a deal with the ReconRobotics and is going to use the Recon Scout to help the prison guards assess situation if things go wrong.
The bot looks like a dumbbell and is sturdy enough to withstand a drop of 30 feet. The bot works like a hand grenade and will help diffuse stand offs in such correction and rehab centers. The Recon Scout costs $6000 or $9000, if you choose an IR camera.
This dumbbell shaped robot may help prison guards not only assess the situation in a stand off but also effectively intervene when things go awfully wrong. Perhaps, this is the beginning of a future where correction centers would have robot-guards instead of human ones. Interesting situation if you ask me.
