Bottle village: A Wonderful Village Made of Recycled Bottles by Grandma Prisbrey

Grandma Prisbrey took 25 long years to produce this creativity. What is even more fascinating is the story behind this unprecedented building. Apparently, the beer bottles used in the building are those discarded by her alcoholic husband. The construction of the Bottle Village started way back in 1956 with a goal to house Tressa Prisbrey’s 17,000 piece pencil collection.

It eventually included 13 full size structures, an impressive mosaic walkway, several shrines and wishing wells. She made all these with the discarded objects that she collected from the local dumps on her daily trips to them. It is also believed that Grandma Prisbrey would often play the piano for her guests in the meditation room.

However, she was forced to leave the Bottle Village in 1982 due to ill health. Until this time, she would often walk the buildings and the sculptures, from the Round House to the Rumpus Room to Cleopatra’s Bedroom with the tours always ending in the meditation room. Unfortunately, the bottle Village was damaged in an earthquake, which occurred in 1994. Apparently, caretakers are still trying their best to raise the funds to restore the site. Only seven of the original 13 structures still stand today. The bottle village received two big recognitions. In 1979, it was declared an official landmark of Simi Valley and, in 1981 California State Historical Landmark.

The bottle Village still draws a lot of attention from people around the world. All thanks to the great Grandma Prisbrey who was wonderfully creative. Although she never considered herself an artist, she was way ahead of many of the artists of her times. She was familiar with the processes of re-cycling and up-cycling even before the terms were in use.
