The last thing that aviation authorities can be certain of is that the French airliner Flight AF 447 flying from Rio to Paris did not send any distress calls before it was lost early on Monday.
For many hours, the plane was mysteriously missing as it did not register on any radar. The mysterious disappearance even caused speculation that it went into the so-called Bermuda Triangle and disappeared. Brazilian search planes worked non-stop to locate the missing commercial airliner.
The Brazilian government has just announced the spotting by one of its search planes of debris seen in the waters 650km (400 miles) off Brazil’s coast, confirming that the debris belongs to the missing Air France airliner that went down while carrying 228 people. According to the report, ‘a Brazilian search plane saw a band of wreckage along a 5km (3m) strip.’ There were no survivors reported.
The report from the Brazilian government confirms that the airliner crashed in the waters of Brazil. The wreckage is described in only a few details as ‘metallic and non-metallic pieces.’ Brazil’s air force earlier gave the description of spotting ‘an airplane seat, an orange buoy and signs of fuel.’ If none of the 228 people on board Flight AF 447 survived, this Air France crash becomes the airline’s worst loss in its history. By estimates of authorities, the plane could have plunged to ‘a depth of 2,000m or 3,000m [6,500ft-9,800ft].’
