Brian Dettmer’s Creation of Sculptural Skeletons Made from Cassette Tapes

The proliferation of cds, mp3s and vcds has virtually obliterated the video and audio cassettes. As a result, the cassette tapes have been literally dumped making no use of them. However, Brian Dettmer, an Atlanta based artist uses the altered cassette tapes and creates interesting sculptural skeletons. He began this creative in 2005.

Apparently, Brian was inspired by a dead bird that he spotted while walking in the street. It is rather interesting to note that all of Brian’s skeleton creations are made using only cassette tapes without glue, tape or other outside materials. It is quite a task to do something like this. Brian started with a skeleton of a bird and now he has made a series of 12 human skulls made exclusively from tapes.

Each of these creations has a different theme ranging from heavy metal to rock. This is perhaps by far the most creative way of re-using the old cassette tapes, which we usually get rid of completely. It will be nice if we can also come up with bright and creative ideas like Brian, but it’s somewhat time consuming to create something unique like this.
