Guantanamo is witnessing changing lights after the British Foreign Office announced that the prisoners in the infamous camp would be taken to Britain, considering the fact that Obama wants the camp clean. The Home Office mentioned that it would treat each prisoner case by case and would be willing to take in foreign prisoners as well. In what could be seen as another step to appease the new American president, Britain has willingly accepted to take in the prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.
The US apparently requested about 100 allies to take in the prisoners as that closing the prison camp had been a key issue of election campaigning during the presidential elections. About 248 prisoners are still languishing under circumstances which can’t be imagined easily.
US is apparently going to take in 17 Uighurs as they cannot go back to China and this is being seen as an opening gesture. Most of the prisoners in the camp were falsely accused of being linked to the 9/11 terrorist attacks across the U.S. It would be interesting how things turn out in future as many more prisoners are expected to be held across the world by the U.S. anyway.
