The century old record set by American; Fred Marriott in 1906 in land speed record for a steam powered car has been broken by Charles Burnett III yesterday, the 25th of August, 2009 at Edward’s Air Force Base in California. The British Steam Car hit a fantastic record of 139.843mph smashing the old one that stood at 127mph.
Nobody would have thought at the outset that the British Steam Car would have broken the record as it started sluggishly due to some technical snags. The car is 25ft long and it is considered to be the “fastest kettle in the world”. Indeed, it deserves the title. I wonder if it would take another century to break this record. Driver Charles Burnett III is absolutely ecstatic to achieve this record.
He expressed his happiness and fulfillment while sharing his amazing experience in an interview. It is really fantastic and commendable for achieving this record high in a stormy weather. It for sure would have been a great challenge for the team to clock the speed at 139.84mph. However, the new record awaits the official confirmation by FIA.
