If you thought it’s the fast snazzy bikes that impress you all the time, then think again! The Bamboo Bike Studio, which is run by three young men in their late 20s has interesting bicycles to offer. They make bicycles using bamboo. This seems to involve a lot of petty processes. To begin with, two of these chaps, Justin Aguinaldo and Sean Murray visit the dense grove near New Brunswick in New Jersey to find the best bamboos.
They are experts at choosing the right and suitable bamboos for their job.Once the bamboos are collected from the grove, they treat the outer skin with a torch. The stems are baked in a homemade oven. After this, the brown stems are fastened into frames, and the joints are wrapped with a thin, ribbon-like carbon fabric that soaks up epoxy. Once the epoxy dries up, the joints of the bike look like as though they have been wrapped with black electrical tape. Quite a wonderful process indeed!
Looks like there are many who have taken for a liking of the bamboo bikes and spent lots of money to make their own. Sari Harris, a self proclaimed tinkerer spent nearly $1,000 to make her own bamboo bike. Her work was supervised by Marty Odlin, an engineer who claims that there are close to 80 bamboo bikes built from his Brooklyn studio.
The Bamboo Bike Studio has drawn a lot of attention from the amateur bike makers from as far as places like California and England as well. They vouch for the smooth ride of these bamboo bikes. I wish I could also make my own.
