Calcium is Women’s Biggest Ally

For starters, calcium hinders osteoporosis and helps in the proper formation of teeth and bones. Calcium, too, reduces the risk of cancers of the colon and rectum. Yogurt, low-fat milk, and cheese may very well be the new anti-cancer allies. A study that supports this premise is published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, suggesting that an increased intake of calcium in a woman’s diet is a shield against cancer – and that dairy is healthy because it is an excellent source of calcium.

Additionally, researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda provide more good reasons to assume that higher doses of calcium decrease the risk of developing cancer in general and carcinoma of the colon and rectum, or neoplasm of the digestive system, in particular, among women. The intake of calcium, according to the estimates of researchers, would be particularly useful to limit the formation of cancer of the colon and rectum.

A lack of calcium is also a major cause of osteoporosis, a disease that affects the female sex more. Specialists have set a recommended daily intake of calcium for women aged 50 years and over (about 1,000 milligrams) and advise women to include, on a daily basis, milk and its derivatives (including yogurt, skimmed milk, and low-fat cheese), as well as sources from a selection of such items as anchovies, mackerel, sardines, and vegetables like broccoli and artichokes. There’s a caveat, though: careful not to overdo it because an excess of calcium leads to the formation of kidney stones.
