
The year 2010 can also be called the year of the ‘Tablet’, as more and more companies are investing their resources into building tablet notebooks. Keeping the race alive and kicking, Freescale Semiconductor, a Texas based company that has been widely known as a supplier of the ARM Cortex chips for mobile devices has announced the launch of an all new sleek tablet notebooks that will have Google Android and Linux operating systems and will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 (CES).
The new series of ultra thin and high performance tablet from Freescale is known to be powered by a 1GHz i.MX515 processor with 512MB DDR2 RAM and the storage capacity of the tablet can vary from 4GB to 64GB of internal storage that can be later expanded with the use of a microSD expansion card. Furthermore, the new tablet will be embedded with the conventional, Wifi, 3G WWAN module (optional), Bluetooth 2.1, a built in GPS and a USB port. Also, it will carry an impressive 3 mega pixel camera with ambient light sensor and a 3 axis accelerometer.
According to Henri Richard (Sr. VP, Sales & Marketing, Freescale),
“Freescale’s new tablet opens the door to an exciting new world of compelling form factors specifically designed and optimized to support common online activities including social media, high-quality audio/video playback and light gaming. We believe the tablet will emerge as a popular form factor for the next generation of smartbooks. By introducing this prototype reference design, Freescale intends to play a vital role in propelling the mainstream adoption of smartbooks.”
The new tablets will come pre-installed with web browsers with and embedded Adobe Flash player along with multimedia plug-ins. For multimedia needs, there is a media center, PDF and image viewers and an e-mail client and RSS reader to cover the communication aspects. Freescale seems to know the immense importance of social networking, because the new tablets will also be given social networking widgets such as that of, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Weather SMS and other applications.
According to Freescale press release,
“The solution is intended to enable a second generation of smartbook products with prices less than $200 and featuring form factors that fully leverage the power, performance and functionality advantages of advanced ARM® processor technology. It is designed to provide instant-on functionality, persistent connectivity and all-day battery life. The tablet will be demonstrated at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show running both the Android and Linux® operating systems.”
