China Enforces Stringent Internet Laws

In an effort to enforce even tighter control over the exposure of internet, Chinese regulators have now instructed the country’s inter service providers (ISPs) and domain management institutions to enhance scrutiny over the domain name registration process. This latest move by China in the field of information technology is being viewed as the government’s efforts to minimize the influence of the world wide web as far as far possible.

According to Ministry of Industry and Information Technology,

“Domain names that have not registered will not be resolved or transferred.”

The Chinese ministry further stated that the move has been initiated to provide a boost to its anti-pornography campaign. Websites of foreign origin are still bewildered as to whether they will be out on the Chinese whitelist or not and if they are not registered in the Chinese database would they be blocked or not?

The Chinese regulators till now have been practicing a rather dominant restrictive internet controls, as they immediately block off sensitive websites that they consider to be a threat or as non-compliance to Chinese IT standards.

However, many still believe that, the anti-pornography campaign is just a cover up used by the government to maintain a tight reign over the internet access in China, especially after many websites were blocked that were either politically too sensitive or simply carried user generated content.
