The new US troop surge has started to move into the homelands of ethnic Pashtuns in eastern and southern Afghanistan. Pashtuns are fierce fighters of invaders. They hate intruders. The Taliban are made up of ethnic Pashtuns.
Obama’s new strategy in Afghanistan, sending 30k new troops into the country, ‘will result in immediate spike in battles.’ Already, the Taliban have announced that they will fight the troop surge. The world will expectedly witness a fresh spate of violent combat clashes ‘as the US directly advances on the ethnic Pashtuns.’
Gilles Dorronsoro, analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, says, “The Pashtuns made their point with the Soviets, and they are making it again with us. They do not surrender. They fight very, very courageously.” According to Air Force Brig Gen. Steven Kwast, “When one noncombatant is killed, for a whole family and tribe and the whole Pashtun belt, there is a moral obligation to vindicate his death. For one person killed, there are 20 people who will pick up rifles.” One Pentagon adviser warns, “When threatened, they tend to stay and fight.”
The new strategic direction from the Obama administration, a result of ‘three months of intense deliberation and consultations,’ hopes that the ‘concentrated assault on the Taliban strongholds in the Pashtun’s homelands will break the insurgents’ fighting capabilities faster than it drives up their recruiting.’ The war with the Pashtun will commence shortly.
