Advancements in technology have taken us so far that we are now able to look beyond galaxies almost to the brink of the universe. Researchers working in every field of development know that years of disappointment can follow with the greatest discoveries to help improve the quality of life.
One of those great discoveries was made by scientists at Boston University. They have created what they call the world’s first communications cyborg. The man in question is suffering from locked-in syndrome which is a condition where the person is completely paralyzed but remains conscious of his environment. Currently, he can make three vowel sounds from a neuroconnection grafted directly into the speech centre of his brain. Led by professor Guenther, a whole team of experts is handling the man’s transition from the mute world to that of the speaking. The software works by decoding signals from a special neuro-eletrode implanted in the man’s brain to create sounds. Fascinatingly, the electrode is coated with special chemicals that would allow regeneration of neurons on and around the area which would, in time, ameliorate the person’s speech ability.
Professor Guenther and his team are working to improve the software that has made way for the man’s communication ability. The breakthrough means that thousands of people around the world would be able to hope for a better life.
