West Bengal and Kolkata have been hit by a strong cyclone Aila. The cyclone is still 50 Km away from the city of Kolkata but the accompanying high winds and storms have already ripped the city apart. The city has almost been brought to standstill by strong stormy winds and heavy rains.

The storm and winds fell hundreds of trees and blocked major city arterial roads. Though the alert was sounded and offices and schools were shut early still commuters had to risk their lives to reach home. More than 24 people have lost their lives in past few hours. Trees fell on buses and cars killing people.

The situation is worse in coastal villages of West Bengal which are right in the path of devastating cyclone. Army has been sent out for rescue operations. The casualty figures are not clear but could be very high. Thousands are feared to be rendered homeless.

Flights coming to Kolkata have been diverted elsewhere. The major train services have also been hit. People have been asked not to venture outdoors for next 24 hours till the cyclone weakens.
