Under the rule of CPM and other Bengali parties, the inhabitants of Darjeeling suffered widespread torture, abuse and exploitation. Thus the seeming intellectualism and love for art is a façade that hides the torture of innocent people in Darjeeling. Economic exploitation has been one form of the exploitation. Apart from all the horticultural produces and the tea that is exported, the region also provides the Bengali government with incredible amounts of revenue due to tourism.

While the region contributes so much to the state government, West Bengal unfortunately has continued to exploit the locals and threaten and torture those who tried to voice out against the oppression. In fact, the demand for a separate statehood for the people of Darjeeling district has been crushed by the forces of CPM party.

Gorkha Janamukti Morcha has spearheaded the arduous task of fighting for freedom for the clutches of west Bengal. Not just the Gorkhas, but other Nepalese, Marwaris, Muslims and immigrants support the creation of a new state independent of West Bengal as most of the revenue that is generated in this pristine district is used by the people in the dusty streets of Calcutta.
