Discovery Communications Launches An All New Network, ‘Velocity’ Exclusively For Men


One of the biggest non-fiction television networks in the world, Discovery Communications, has now announced the introduction of a brand new network called, ‘Velocity’ that will cater exclusively to topics for men. Velocity is scheduled to go on-air in the fourth quarter of the year 2011 and this new HD channel will be launched to phase out the current generation HD Theater network, while being delivered to about 40 million homes when it is launched. Discovery Communications, best known for the immensely popular Discovery Channel already runs a number of highly revered television channels such as the Military Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Discovery Health Channel etc. and is also the sole distributor of BBC America and BBC World News to U.S based cable and satellite TV operators.

The all new Velocity from Discovery Communications will showcase a number of men oriented shows including some of the most popular series such as Inside West Coast Customs, Mecum Auto Auctions, Café Racer and Chasing Classic Cars. Also, this new channel will cater to a variety of other categories including automotive, sports and leisure, adventure and travel, constituting about 400 hours of thrilling and enlightening entertainment.  The announcement of the official launch of Velocity is scheduled to take place on Thursday in New York. With the introduction of Velocity, Discovery Communications is also shuffling its senior management, wherein the current VP of production and development, HD Theater, Bob Scanlon will assume the role of senior vice president for Velocity.

“We started noticing some good ratings with some of our more upscale lifestyle programming, especially in the auto arena, and we just felt let’s keep building on that, now’s the time.”
