We are all familiar with some of the most common top level domains or TLDs such as, .com, .edu, .net, .org. But what not many people are aware of is that, the existence of the top level domains is controlled by he Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), where the organization has complete authority to decide whether or not a TLD is suitable for the web and whether it should be given the permission to go online or not.

However, now an all new domain called DotEco or .eco is in the process of gathering support and approval to ensure that, ICANN make designates it as a top level domain and open its venues to the world wide web. DotEco is a domain that has been invented to spread awareness about the environment and other ecological concerns. This organization has full support from the former U.S. Vice President, Al Gore, The Sierra Club and many other high profile eco-organizations and celebrities, who wish to see this domain on the internet as soon as possible. The primary reason for the growing popularity of DotEco is the fact that, every registration on this domain will contribute 50% of the selling price to non-profit organizations and establishments that are working hard to save the environment.

DotEco if given the status of a top level domain (TLD) by ICANN, hopes to provide a free platform for the non profit organizations and others to spread awareness about the perils of global warming and provide education as to the ways with which, people can save and maintain the ecological balance, all the while earning revenue via domain fees. DotEco has also initiated an online campaign to gather support from individual users as well at Support DotEco.
