In good faith, Iran receives US President Barack Obama’s conciliatory message to the Iranian people but the country feels that any reconciliation needs ‘a concrete step forward.’ This is according to Ali Akbar Javanfaker, one of the closest advisers to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Javanfaker said, “We receive the message in good faith, but words are not enough. The Obama administration must act to solve a specific problem that has historical roots.”
The US president gave a videotaped message to the Iranian people on the occasion of the celebration of ‘Nowruz’ or Persian New Year. “In this season of new beginnings, I would like to speak clearly to the Iranian leaders,” said Obama.
”We have serious differences that have been expanded over time. My government is now committed to a diplomacy that addresses the full range of outstanding issues between us and the search for constructive ties between US, Iran, and the international community,” added the US president.
The White House has indicated that the video represents an American president’s effort to speak directly to the Iranian people on behalf of the US’ desire to collaborate with the Middle Eastern country.
In his inaugural speech, Barack Obama clearly stressed his government’s desire to take a conciliatory stance in its foreign relations policy. This is in clear contrast to his predecessor’s interventionist style.
Mr. Obama’s efforts are commendable. His foreign relations policy seems like a breath of fresh air. As expected, his cordial attitude will be met by political pleasantry. But, of course, Iran can see through the message. After all, what the US president was actually saying was that Iran should abandon its nuclear ambition so that the US can accept with open arms those who ‘unclench their fist.’
On the other hand, Iran clearly received only the video message. Obama’s offer of dialogue and his promised ‘new beginning’ start only when sanctions against Iran end.
No amount of doublespeak is better than the prospect of owning a nuclear bomb.
