In the first three months of 2009, drug-related killings in Mexico were recorded at total 2,644 cases or 26% less than the previous three months, said Alejandro Rubido, government spokesman on security matters. The statistics prove that the violence of organized crime in Mexico has dipped.

The Security Cabinet attributes the significant reduction in the number of homicides to operations participated in by federal agents and military forces. In recent months, authorities persistently maintained efforts in dismantling the operational structure of various drug cartels, particularly through arrests of key leaders.

Significant blows to the crime syndicates came with the seizure of large quantities of drugs, weapons, ammunition, and grenades. According to Rubido, these achievements have undoubtedly been the product of a government strategy that is breaking down, weakening, and fracturing the operational capacities of the different drug gangs.

Violence by and among criminal gang rivals in the country stems from disputes in the areas of monitoring, collection, transfer, and sale of drugs in both wholesale and street retail. The most violent places in the country are Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, and Culiacan.
