An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude hit Italy early this morning. The epicenter was picturesque town of L’Aquila. Official death toll till now is 50. But roughly nearly 40,000 To 50,000 people have been rendered homeless by this quake and its aftershocks. People are still trapped in the rubble.
According to Italy’s Civil Protection Agency many buildings have collapsed. Italian news agency, ANSA, has reported that 26 towns have been affected by this earthquake. Few children tragically died as their houses collapsed. Hundreds of residents of L’Aquila rushed out to safety and watched the buildings crack and crumble. Most residents are out in the streets with their luggage as volunteers were mobilizing aid throughout Italy. The tremors of the earthquake were felt even in Rome which is some 95 miles away from the epicenter.
Italy is prone to mild earthquakes due to seismic activity in the region. But this one seems to be the most powerful one to hit in recent times. The worst earthquake had struck Italy in 1908. It measured 7.5 -magnitude and had killed nearly 200,000 people.
