Confused? I’ll tell you… We all know how the betting cities of the world look. I’ve never been to one actually, but whenever I think or hear of Las Vegas or the likes, this is how I would express it- lively, bright, cool, noisy and busy. And from this, you can just imagine the amount of power these cities use, the green gases they produce and the pollution they cause. Central City, Colorado may change my views and the credit goes to its mayor, Buddy Schmalz.

Central City has recently taken the help of the University of Colorado Denver’s Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Program to calculate the energy usage of the town. They then realized that the gaming machines in the town’s casinos were gulping down power and the air conditioners were working over time causing their economy to fall rapidly. This is when Central City started replacing its starry, glittering lights with efficient LED bulbs and surprisingly, the power consumption decreased by 75%. The casinos are now turning towards the sun for its energy and also recycling things. What more wonders can a study do?

The reason why Central City turned to eco-gambling- whether to attract tourists or save its economy is not our concern. What matters for us is the gaming town is now going green. Let’s hope Vegas follows…
