One of the problems of the international airports is the long distance between the parking and the terminal. An English project should put an end to that.
The solution calls Personal Rapid Transport, an electric taxi that will transport passengers of the third busier airport of the world, Heathrow, in London, from the terminal 5 to one of the car parks of the place. The great difference from common taxis and bus that also make the same transfer is not, however, just the fact of treating of an electric vehicle and, therefore, less pollutant.
The largest innovation is driver’s lack. But don’t think that the user will need to drive it. The car, that should enter in operation at the beginning of next year and it takes until four passengers of every time, works alone. It is only necessary to press a button.
The flow of the traffic should get better. That because the taxi can only accomplish a pre-established itinerary and it should not compete for space with the cars and bus in the streets, since it walks on rails and it uses a lasers and computers system to navigate.
That is the just the first part of the project that already cost USD 35 million and it should put in operation 18 models of the vehicles. In a second phase, there will be electric taxis working in all the terminals and car parks of the airport and it is waited that will be used for about 500 thousand people per year.
