It seems the famous Holocaust ‘love story’ which was to be published as book titled ‘Angel at the Fence’ has turned out to be false. The author it seems fabricated this tale about how he met this girl who threw food over the fence in a camp after many years and eventually married her.
This is probably not the first time somebody has fabricated personal history to get publicity. And why not? The publishing agents and houses go hunting for such tales which can become best sellers and maybe even win accolades and improve profits of the house. They are never interested in innumerable honest personal histories which don’t have magical elements of tragedy and romance. Everyone searches for real life fairy-tales to sell to people who hunger for such emotional tales. Love and separation are best selling emotions after all.
Once again the world is going to miss out on yet another heart-tugging fairy-tale. But the facts should not kill the fiction. Hope the author finds another agent and publishes his romantic tale along with his real experiences of the Holocaust as a book of pure fiction. I wonder who was trying to cash in on the back drop of holocaust, was it the author or the publisher?
