How wise is the decision of Obama to close the detention facility at Guantanamo ?
A Saudi man identified as Said Ali Al-Shihiri , after spending nearly six years in the US detention facility at Guantanamo returned home about a year ago and from there went to Yemen, which is Osama bin Laden’s ancestral home. According to a purported internet statement by Al Qaeda, Al-Shihri was the group’s second-in-command in Yemen.
This case only deepens the complexity of Obama’s decision to shut down the US prison, especially since there are no rehabilitation programs in place for these ex-prisoners in some countries.
But this may only mean that “President Obama has to proceed extremely carefully….There was no justification for disappearing people in a place that was located offshore of America so it was outside the reach of U.S. law,” as told by Jane Harman , head of House Homeland Security subcommittee on intelligence.
Obama’s intention to close the facility is fine, but the vague timetable and lack of specifics is worrying. Just like specifics were given on the economy recovery process, we need more on how the legal, military and human-rights issues related to this closure would be handled too.
