Researchers at MIT have formulated to make fabrics behave like camera. This is perhaps the first time that a fabric has been able to do what a camera can do without lens. Moreover, it can collect images just like a camera. The experiment was done with the help of fibres which detect light and when processed by computer, you could reproduce a simple smiley face.
Of course, it is in a nascent stage but the research could have great implications in a world when everything depends on the lens. The idea behind this research is to help soldiers to detect threats all around them, when wearing clothes made of this fabric. The technology involves the usage of fibres which are less than a millimetre in diameter.
The fibres come with two cylindrical shells made of semiconductors. They are connected with the outside world with the help of inbuilt electrodes. The technology may not be advanced now but it would be of great use to not only to the indicated soldiers, but also others who need to work under hazardous circumstances and in rescue operations.
